AfterEllen is one of the only femslash centered blogs that major television networks and media outlets take seriously when it comes to lesbian representation in mainstream pop culture, so this win was a momentous occasion for Swan Queen and the Once Upon a Time Fandom. At least, it would have been if it hadn’t been completely soured by the usual homophobic individuals that are present in fandoms–not to mention the director of the show himself.
I happened to tweet Adam Horowitz regarding his tweet that stated ‘Not surprised you didn’t mention Swan Queen at all in the congratulations,’ and actually received a reply–which was even more problematic than the original issue.
I had to zoom in on lana fixing baby jmos hair bc of ….reasons.
My friend introduced me to Black Sails and then this happened because lesbipirates.
Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parrilla on set
Good job today Adam, at least now we have a couple of tweets to answer to the ‘craskship’ and the ‘it’s never gonna happen’ arguments (it doesn’t matter if we believe it or not).
There is only one word that can express our feelings right now: wow! We’re absolutely delighted and oh so happy by the response we got for the first Swan Queen Appreciation Week we created. We hope you had as much fun as us doing wonderful graphics and gifs. (but alright let’s be honest, some of the prompts were torture to do)
You are welcome to take your time to finish (or start!) the sqaw; we’re still tracking the official tag, so we will check all the new posts, don’t worry. If you wish to look at all the great work that was made, check out this link and be amazed. See you guys around for some new fun projects!
The only thing that was hate that I saw was a tweet that all out said ‘i hate you lol sorry’. the rest was criticism from upset fans who want to be recognized as legitimate part of the show, just as any person who ships say Snowing is. The fans who ship Swan Queen have been framed as bad guys and crazy bitches since the start, and time and again the Swan Queen/SWEN fandom have shown proof and meta and links and sources showing that no, we aren’t. It isn’t about getting two hot women together. It is a perk. It is about representation of diversity, something this show is greatly lacking. The first thing the show had promised was that it wasn’t going to be the typical telling of the fairytales we knew, that it was characters we knew and loved in a new age and time.
Guess what. This new age and time has people of all colors shapes sizes orientations and sexualites. Guess what we are still seeing. White privilaged people getting happily ever after. Literally no one else. True love is said over and over (and over and over and over etc.) again to be the best magic, that only seems to be true for the white heterosexual couples no matter what they do, whereas Regina, a woman of color has to earn it, and earn it she has over and over (and over and over and over and over etc.) again.
A show that promised something a little different isn’t delivering. They aren’t going to, because that is what brings in money supposedly. Except this time around, the queer ship is the most popular ship, and it is getting the least amount of recognition. Captain Swan has just popped up, and it got a reaction from Jenifer Morrison. She even talks about Graham more than she is willing to talk about Swan Queen. I am not sure if that is because of her contract or if that is because she has her own thing about lesbians (which is a strong theory of mine, and I know I am not the only one).
Long post short: This isn’t about shipping. This isn’t ‘just a TV show’. This is heteronormativity at its worst. This is a group of people who are just in their right to not like what is happening in a TV show as any other group of people who watch Once Upon a Time and don’t like an aspect of the storyline.
Only it is Swan Queen (and other lesbian ships) who gets shut down the most.
Rape culture arguments aside, I still can’t even wrap my head around how CS even makes sense. I mean I get that she could be attracted to him, and I even get the ‘kindred spirits’ thing back in early season 2. Like Emma was very pirate like in her past, engaging in not-so-lawful activities to get…
